Book Review: Introduction: ‘The Complete Christian Guide to Understanding Homosexuality’

September 1st, 2010 Patrick Fitzgerald 2 comments

Subtitle: A Biblical and Compassionate Response to Same-Sex Attraction

“Wouldn’t it be great if this book could be a one-stop resource?” So we selected the main topics associated with homosexuality —theological, clinical, social, political, and familial—then solicited contributions from a variety of authors with specific expertise. The result is a comprehensive guide providing biblically based insights into the many issues the subject raises. [p16-emph in original]

There is much ground to cover here. The book is nearly 500 pages long and most of the information contained is an organized conglomeration of things we’ve been hearing for years and rebutted ad-nauseum. However, there are many studies, statistics and sources I am unfamiliar with that are in need of investigation by the “militant homosexual activist” slueuths among us.

In regard to that, and to their credit, they’ve not only put the footnotes at the end of each chapter, but also (in addition to website urls) list the page numbers of the books they cite from.

Joe Dallas and Nancy Heche are listed as the general editors. Though most of the book is written by Joe Dallas and Nancy Heche, contributing authors are listed as: Alan Chambers, Paul Copan, Melisa Fryrear, Mike Haley, Bill Maier and Randy Thomas.

All of whom, with the exception of Paul Copan (to my knowledge), are or were speakers at Love Won Out conferences:

Love Won Out: Christian experts will address everything from why some people struggle with homosexuality to practical ways the church can respond with the truth and grace of Christ. Whether you are a parent or friend of a gay loved one, a pastor or therapist looking for help to assist those struggling with unwanted same-sex attractions…

Given the number of contributing authors, this book is riddled with contradictions. Some small, some galaxical.

IMNSHO, the willingness of the authors to participate in the construction of this manifesto makes them party to everything that is said by everyone else. I say this because there is some serious ugliness contained within these pages. (Note: If any of them publicly denounce their involvement with this book I will eat my sock.)

church in ways that are very uncomfortable to confront. Defined biblically, I hope we can unite against sodomy. Defined biblically, we have all been sodomites, have we not? We agree.

Millions To Defeat Them, Nickels To Serve Them

March 21st, 2007 Jim Burroway 20 comments

Karen Booth is the leader of an Exodus member ministry called Transforming Congregations. She was offended recently when Mike Jones, the man who outed Ted Haggard, placed his massage table for auction on eBay. The proceeds of the auction where promised to Project Angel Heart, an established, reputable charity which provides care for AIDS and cancer patients. In response, Karen Booth placed a request on her ministry website for others to join her in contacting eBay to demand that they remove the auction, calling it “reprehensible”:

This item is not only offensive to any person in the eBay community who might be personally connected to Mr. Haggard, but is also highly offensive to Christians, particularly conservative evangelicals. I think it is a violation of eBay’s stated Community Values and I ask you to remove the listing from the eBay website.

I have put an alert on my ministry’s national website and have also informed other national Christian ministries, including the American Family Association. (The auction is also being discussed on several Internet blogs.) If the offensive listing is not removed, I will encourage my supporters to boycott eBay, which I also intend to do.

On March 17, one day before the auction was to end, eBay pulled it. Ex-Gay Watch author David Roberts spoke with Mike Jones on Sunday. Mike said he was given a vague reason having to do with rules regarding charities. He was bewildered by this, since he had received help from eBay staff in listing the item to begin with. Mostly he felt sad because Project Angel Heart was expecting the much needed donation, and as any eBayer can tell you, the last day — the last minutes even — are when the bids really fly.

Love Won Out/Palm Springs Protest – Dan’s Account And Photos

September 24th, 2006 Daniel Gonzales 26 comments

We got to the protest site (at Southwest Community Church) around 6:45 since check-in for Love Won Out began at 7 a.m. We were there for about half an hour before two buses organized by the Unity Rally arrived. The Unity Rally was a coalition of liberal political, social and gay rights groups formed to provide a uniform voice in response to Love Won Out. Ex-Gay Watch ultimately decided to speak in our own voice and remain unaffiliated with the Unity Rally coalition. We planted ourselves firmly on the curb by the church’s main driveway and each person was given a sign they had picked the slogan for. Before the Unity Rally buses arrived several other small groups of private individuals arrived.

A Constitutionalist’s World

March 4th, 2006 David Roberts 5 comments

When I was about 8 years old, the moon landings were still fresh and fascinating. Like many kids from that time, a couple of my friends and I decided we were going to build a space ship and go to the moon. What strikes me most about that memory is how real the anticipated trip was to me – a tribute to youthful imagination I suppose. I told my parents, grabbed a bag of grapes and a sandwich I believe, and off we went (well, sort of).

I was recently told of a group calling themselves Christian Exodus and reading over their mission evoked this old memory. They aren’t headed for the moon, however, but to South Carolina. Essentially, they believe the Union (United States) has been going downhill since and including the Abraham Lincoln administration. They seem to have little use for any amendments past number 10 and don’t see any hope that anyone can do much to make what they consider positive change in our Federal Government. Their answer is to pack up and move to SC where they will slowly take over the local politics and secede from the Union in 2016.

Peter LaBarbera, Illinois Family Group Promote Racist Constitution Party

February 26th, 2006 Mike Airhart 11 comments

LaBarbera.jpgPeter LaBarbera’s Illinois Family Institute identifies itself as an independently financed partner of Focus on the Family, the Family Research Council, and the Alliance Defense Fund.

His career has been spent protesting against communism, leftist Latin American Christians, liberal freedoms, and supposed antifamily values. In the 1980s, he supported “contra” terrorist attacks against liberals and leftist civilians in Nicaragua. During his tenure with Robert Knight at the Family Research Council and Concerned Women for America, LaBarbera actively promoted the exgay movement — for example, offering favors to Jerry Falwell and his handpicked exgay spokesman, Michael Johnston, at a forum with Soulforce that I attended in 1999. LaBarbera’s writing enjoys support from both the Exodus Media Blog and the Exodus national office.

LaBarbera is a conservative, to be sure, but I thought surely (surely!) his politics are a far cry from what the Southern Poverty Law Center calls the most extreme political party in the United States: The Constitution Party.

According to the SPLC, the Constitution Party (formerly the U.S. Taxpayers Party) seeks to make the Old Testament the law of the land. It seeks to undo every constitutional amendment since 1913 — including women’s right to vote. It seeks to re-legalize assault weapons for undisclosed purposes, and it flirts with advocates for the execution of adulterers and homosexuals.

God to Punish America for Legalizing Sodomy?
