No Prayers for Bobby From Exodus International?

January 30th, 2009 David Roberts 31 comments

Last Sunday evening, during the Lifetime broadcast of Prayers for Bobby, Exodus Vice President Randy Thomas was (in his own words) wasting 96 minutes of his life watching Brad Pitt in Burn After Reading.  Since then he has written about Ted Haggard, and even the weather (twice!), but not a peep about Bobby.  I waited to write this because I thought for sure he would come up with something, even if only to complain or feign some sort of lament that Bobby didn’t find the right ex-gay ministry before taking his life.

Prayers for Bobby is a real story — first a book, then twelve years to make the movie happen.  In so many ways it illustrateed the pain, conflict, abuse and even misguided love that make up the ex-gay equation.  In a small package, it touched on just about everything, even if briefly.  And it was broadcast on Lifetime, a relatively mainstream cable network.  It brought the subject out for discussion even among some who are not directly involved, but certainly many of us who are did talk about it — it hit us powerfully.  This alone should have been enough to bring a response.

Randy Thomas is the Executive Vice President of the largest ex-gay referral organization in the world, Exodus International — the very face of ex-gay.  A lot of what he professes to believe was illustrated in the movie.  If nothing else, Bobby represents the kind of person Randy claims is most important to him, that he wants to “help.” In every way Randy is connected with this movie, and he has every reason, even if only to disagree with it’s message, to comment about it, or use it to communicate to others.

The same silence came from Exodus’ official channels.  There was nothing in their blog, no press release, nothing.  In the past they have put out official press releases to announce an event by Focus on the Family, an ABC program on the so called “gay gene debate” and even a simple article by Randy Thomas. Yet nothing at all for a true story dealing directly with ex-gay issues and available to anyone with cable TV service.

Exodus President Alan Chambers also has a blog.  He does not post nearly as often as Randy, but he does post.  His last real entry was from 3 weeks ago entitled Barack Obama: Anomaly or Anti-Christ?  So as we can see, he posts on things far less related to Exodus (and in this case, perhaps less related to reality).  But nothing on his opinion of the movie, nothing to assure ex-gays (or those who may be thinking about the prospect) that he might be in touch with what’s going on, that he is willing to deal with the hard issues, or perhaps use this opportunity to express some genuine compassion.

So I sat here thinking, what reason would there be for Exodus to remain absolutely, completely silent about this movie?  Randy seems like an exceptionally passive-aggressive individual, so it seems possible that his review of another inane bit of trivia at exactly the time when Prayers for Bobby was showing might communicate some sort of message.  Clearly he had the time to write.  But not to touch on this event which has so very much to do with the subject of his life’s work, how can this not be intentional?  What would be the reason?

Did they perhaps think no one would notice, either the movie itself or their avoidance of it?  There seems no explanation except that they wanted to make a statement by not addressing it.

What do you think?  And perhaps more importantly, what do you suppose someone inclined to seek out Exodus will take from this?  Did they shoot themselves in the foot?

Breaking News: Colombia Rules for Sweeping Equality Under the Law

January 29th, 2009 David Roberts 1 comment

Source: Blabbeando

The high court ordered changes to 42 norms that range from Criminal, Civil and Disciplinary Codes, to the special health plan available to military forces.

The Magistrates embraced a position paper submitted by their peer, Rodrigo Escobar Gil.

They ruled that the challenged dispositions did not justify the discrimination they instituted, or that the variances with regards to same-sex couples placed these people in a position of vulnerability before the law.

And in both cases, the Constitutional Court held that the right to equality was violated.

Hence, provisions such as those contained the Disciplinary and Penal Codes, which establish the right against incrimination by a spouse, should also be applied to heterosexual (sic) partners.

Another instance is that of crimes related to domestic violence; victims can be same-sex partners or aggravation imposed by law for crimes against the person.

This includes cases where reparations are made to victims of heinous crimes.

According to an update on the Blabbeando post, this also means that “gay Colombian citizens can grant foreign same-sex partners immigration rights in the same way that married heterosexual partners can sponsor their spouses for immigration purposes.”

It continues to amaze us how countries which many might consider less progressive at first glance — certainly Colombia has been rocked by the instabilities and violence of that region and it’s drug wars — are recognizing the need for equality under the law for GLBT citizens.

Watch Ted Haggard On Oprah Today

January 28th, 2009 David Roberts 114 comments

Ted Haggard on OprahTed Haggard appears with his wife on Oprah today.  This show was scheduled with others to promote his upcoming HBO special, The Trials of Ted Haggard and taped prior to the latest revelations about his relationship with young church volunteer Grant Haas.  The HBO special was also taped before these latest allegations though they are sure to increase scrutiny of the documentary.  Haggard spoke briefly to this point in a subsequent letter to Oprah.

“Oprah, I did not reveal the relationship on your show out of privacy concerns—even though there was never any physical contact. I have regretted my irresponsible behavior. I apologized to Grant, my family and the church two years ago. I now ask him again for his forgiveness as well as the people of the church.”

Whatever else he may be, he is a man, probably gay, confused and experiencing a lot of pain and, one would think, incredible condemnation. He’s made some bad choices and hurt a lot of people, but I hope those around him are considering the risk that he may attempt harm to himself before this is over.

Perhaps I am just naive, but when I look at Haggard, sometimes I see a 50+ year old, worn out “Bobby,” still unable to break free of the ex-gay myth that has been imposed upon him so powerfully.

Those who are able to watch are invited back to discuss their impressions.

Update: Excerpt from the show

At about 1:40 is the part I was watching when I wrote this comment.  From the sound of it, Gayle could probably help Ted most by pulling back on that input — we know where it so often leads.  There are some things that follow from Ted that still sound a bit misdirected, but considering how much he is having to parse through, I’m rather surprised.  Just realizing that his attractions are a part of him and not demons is a big step to which I’m sure many here can attest.

I have nothing to go on but a hunch, but I just don’t believe the story about one of his father’s workers sexually abusing him.  He phrased it in a way that no one should be surprised if they didn’t know who he was, he left soon, never heard from him again.  But such an incident would be just what ex-gay counselors would want to find and I think early on  Ted obliged and probably doesn’t know now if it’s truth or fantasy.

Haggard Scandal Expands As Second Sex Partner Speaks Out

It appears that New Life Assembly paid the young man $180K in what can only be described as hush money.  He comes forward in this report by TV station KDRO.  The references to the life that Ted Haggard was actually living are incredible, especially when we now know that the church knew about much of this in 2006.  At the very least, New Life Pastor Brady Boyd should step down immediately.  This deception is unacceptable, and one is hard pressed to find a reasonable excuse for the amount of money that was spent to “deal with it.”

Video: Ex-Gay Guru Richard Cohen Brings Out The Magnets

It’s a non-sequential?  The video above is from the upcoming movie Chasing the Devil: Inside the Ex-Gay Movement by Bill Hussung and Mishara Canino-Hussing.  Ex-Gay guru and all around bizarre guy Richard Cohen seems only too happy to participate, bringing back memories of pillows and tennis rackets.  Listen carefully, there are some interesting comments.  One that I didn’t quite get is in the beginning, he’s says he has been married for “2300 23,000 years”?  Is that just a joke or is it a Moonie thing? (I honestly don’t know)

Dr. Jack Drescher brings us a brief period of sanity, perhaps laced with bemusement at what he is seeing — yet again.  Meanwhile,Cohen has a new web site and is training “coaches” or whatever, having apparently mended fences with Exodus International.  One has to wonder, when will someone on that side of the aisle deal with Cohen in a public way?  Or is this Prop 8 where the ends justify the means and keeping ex-gay pseudo-science going — even this most bizarre of chapters — is justifiable?

Think about that as they put on happy faces and spin, spin, spin at the ongoing Exodus Leadership conference.

Ex-Gay Stephen Bennett: Who’s Your Daddy (Pants)

January 26th, 2009 David Roberts 14 comments

Staunch ex-gay Stephen Bennett has apparently moved to yet another work-from-home project.  While Good As You’s Jeremy Hooper may have spoiled the grand opening, the cache still shows the details of the  now locked page.  More can be seen below from the brief RSS feed:

Daddy Pants - Stephen Bennett

Bennett has run through a lot of small business ventures to earn his living; sign making, drawing, singing, ex-gay, podcast, virtual church, private discussion group, selling real estate, and now sewing and selling pajama bottom pants to name a few.  Many of these ventures required donations to provide the capital, from which Bennett and his wife would take their paycheck and expenses.  This is perfectly legal to our knowledge, but in Bennett’s case not particularly efficient.  For example, in 2006, Bennett’s ministry reported gross income of nearly $300,000.  From that, Bennett and his wife received approx $125K in compensation and miscellaneous benefits, along with nearly $50K in travel expenses (Form 990 – 2006).

Many in the ex-gay industry give us reason to question their sincerity.  When facts are few, it makes trust even harder to come by.  But in our opinion, few have such a strong ring of insincerity as Stephen Bennett.  Despite many chances to give depth and support to his story, he has not done so.  And his dogged claim of 100% homosexual to heterosexual, while just what the anti-gay activist right wants to hear, is far from both the data and the reality of ex-gay programs.

If the pattern continues, “Daddy Pants” will be replaced at some point in the near future with yet another idea.  The requirements are only that it can be done from home, take little money to start and sell for more than it should.  Then again, if it prevents his contribution to the pain and confusion of GLBT’s, perhaps we should all buy a pair?

Video: Man Who Exposed Ted Haggard Speaks Out Again

January 25th, 2009 David Roberts 3 comments

Filming and Editing by Daniel Gonzales

Mike Jones, the man who exposed Ted Haggard’s extramarital, same-sex encounters in 2006, has just made a video to get a few more things off his chest.  Jones was an escort in the Denver area and Haggard was the Pastor of the huge New Life Church, and President of the National Association of Evangelicals.  Haggard resigned in shame after his relationship with Jones was exposed, and has spent the years since going through various phases of counseling, even claiming that he was no longer gay after the first three weeks.

Recent news has brought out yet another such relationship with a young man who was volunteering at New Life Church during approximately the same time.  In this latest case, the church paid for the young man’s college tuition and counseling on the condition that confidentiality was maintained.

In a phone call early on, Mike Jones relayed to this writer his dismay at the way he had been treated by both sides of the issue, the gay community included.  Some of this spilled over into discussions at XGW, when Karen Booth of the anti-gay Transforming Congregations succeeded in pressuring eBay to remove an auction of Jones message bench (which had obviously gained notoriety at that time).  He had promised the proceeds to Project Angel Heart, a very old and worthwhile charity which provides food and assistance to AIDS and cancer patients.

Jones wrote a book about what happened called “I Had to Say Something: The Art of Ted Haggard’s Fall.”
