XGW Digest: July 9, 2008

  • Dr. Laura softens her anti-gay stance.
  • Randy Thomas notes the increase of HIV contractions among men of color aged 13-24, and blames the promiscuity of the “gay lifestyle.” He fails to mention that the “down-low” culture created by intolerance of LGBTQ persons among Blacks and Latinos is what drives unsafe sexual practices that lead to infection.
  • Focus on the Family is apparently opposed to gays being monogamous.
  • Accusing political rivals of twisting her comments, Iris Robinson still boldly insist homosexuality is an abomination, but not a mental disorder. She believes homosexuals do not need psychiatric help for mental health needs caused by the stress of discrimination and isolation, rather, they need counselling from practitioners for their sexual confusion, she told the Northern Ireland Assembly.
  • Theologian Miguel de la Torre challenges the theology of James Dobson.
  • A straight Christian explains how he became gay-friendly.
  • There are no reggae tunes to be played for LGBTs visiting Jamaica, still one of the most homophobic countries in the world, where they love their anti-gay Prime Minister.
  • Box Turtle Bulletin reported that the American Family Association (AFA) had called for the boycott of Mc Donald’s for supporting the “homosexual agenda”. Unfortunately for the AFA, the proud man with the red wig, lips and shoes could not be bothered.
  • Prominent Korean gay actor Hong Suk-Chun, recaps his coming out experience and how it changed his life.
  • Beyond Ex-Gay to host Ex-Gay Expose opposite NARTH’s annual conference in November.
  • Exodus Vice President Randy Thomas excited over finding two people who don’t think he is a jerk. Good for you, Randy.

Emily, thank you for mentioning the upcoming Denver event.

Actually, Beyond Ex-Gay will not host the Ex-Gay Exposé. Rather, our roles is to hep bring together a coalition of local and national organizations concerned about the dangerous misinformation NARTH continues to disseminate.

Truth Wins Out, which has taken an active role around previous NARTH conferences, along with local Soulforce and PFLAG chapters, will offer a variety of events. Daniel and I, as local Denver residents, created the following video to garner more community involvement and to invite others to share their passion and expertise.

You’re welcome, Christine, but Eugene Wagner gets the hat tip on that one since he notified me of it. Best of luck spreading your message.

Has anyone else read the comments under Randy Thomas’ blogpost? I feel guilty laughing, but, damn, the parodies just don’t do the ex-gays justice.

    Tackle hugs. Indeed.

    Willie,

I had just finished reading them too and thought, and this guy is ex-gay? I came here and saw your comment and knew I was not the only one who saw that.

Did you notice the comments under FOTF’s blog post? From *Christians*? Did you notice the comments are now closed? If I were really politically incorrect, I’d say a few Indians are beginning to stray from the reservation. ;-)

I can’t believe we have to be sympathetic to McDonald’s. Looks like LGBT-raised kids who want Happy Meals just might get their wish a few times this summer, anyway.

As for Randy Thomas’ encounter with his neighbors and the comments, well, if I permit myself a can of cattiness in this case, I’ll end up drinking the entire catty 6-pack and dancing on top of the catty table with a catty lampshade on my head. So I won’t address it!

Sounds like some of that Richard Cohen therapy is getting results.

In response to this, the Archbishop of the [Anglican] Church of Ireland issued a statement saying that they may start blessing gay unions.

The Onion has this to say. Frivolous I know, but for me it hits the nail on the head.
