What ‘Change’ Is Possible? Former Ex-Gay Leaders Challenge Exodus

The incomparable Box Turtle Bulletin has recorded exclusive video interviews with the three former ex-gay Exodus leaders who apologized for their past ex-gay/antigay advocacy at a press conference yesterday. The apologies were aired at a press conference and reported by the Los Angeles Times.

The interviews include:

Michael Bussee, co-founder of Exodus International

Darlene Bogle, Paraklete Ministries, Hayward, California

Jeremy Marks, former president, Exodus International Europe

In further video recorded last September by filmmaker Esteban Rael (Me and God) and aired this week by Box Turtle Bulletin, Bussee explains why he co-founded Exodus, how he and his future partner came to understand that Exodus’ philosophy was fundamentally flawed, and what he thinks of Exodus’ recruitment of youths.

  2. Emily,

Exodus (presumedly Alan) wrote the following on the Exodus site in September 2006:

I have no trouble crediting Michael and even Michael’s late partner, Gary Cooper, with the founding of Exodus. However, the founders also include longtime faithful leaders like Jim Kaspar, Frank Worthen and Roberta (Robbi) Kenney.

But the scandalous issue remains: Michael Bussee and Gary Cooper, two “founders” of Exodus did leave their wives to begin a relationship that lasted until Cooper’s death from AIDS complications in the early 1990’s. Does this mean that Exodus is ineffective or that it was built on a foundation of sand? Absolutely not!

I am grateful to Michael, Gary, Jim, Frank, Robbi and the dozens of early leaders that followed the Lord’s leading to birth this vital outreach. It has reached millions of people in this world with the truth that God desperately loves all people and that He has an amazing plan for their lives. I regularly thank Michael for his contributions—sometimes he bristles and other times he says, “You’re welcome.”

  3. I find Exodus’ statement to be unctuous. Why would any organization be this generous with those who discredit its message? Keep in mind that this is the same Exodus that is shamelessly involved in culture war politics.
