That was the juicy little email sent out by Mission America this evening, a conservative Christian political outfit operated by Linda Harvey of Columbus, OH. Ex-gay activist Stephen Bennett sent one out to his members as well. On the other end is what appears to be pirated video from the 8 year old documentary It’s Elementary, along with hardcore racist and Nazi propaganda.
The video in the links above is of a sample classroom where teachers speak intelligently about gay people to help demonstrate how to help prevent stereotypes and prejudice later in life. This is ironic, considering the fact that the owner of the YouTube account has tagged it with the word “faggots” and has surrounded it with other videos entitled Hitler and Keep America White.
With the other titles so obvious, and the epithets right next to the videos in the links, one is left to wonder if Bennett and Mission America are so entrenched in hate that they didn’t even notice what they were promoting.
It should be noted that Mission America is one of the organizations who supported a boycott of the Day of Silence, calling it a day “in which students and some supportive faculty intentionally remain silent throughout the school day to protest alleged oppression of homosexuals.” [emphasis added]
What I liked about going to see that racist/bigot’s profile on YouTube was that the banner add was for JOHN EDWARDS in ’08!!
It’s getting obvious that people like Bennet and Mission America are trying to take up the slack in bigotry since Fred Phelps and klan have started to wane in their noisiness.
I called Stephen Bennett Ministries and Irene answered the Phone. I asked is Stephen would issue an apology for sending people to a neonazi video poster. She denied Stephen had any part in this and that he “Has nothing to do with it”

And I never even got a chance to see what he did to me. Harumph!
So in other words, they did know they were collaborating with anti-Semitic racists — but they just didn’t care.
You can buy the whole thing (legally) at the link in the post; it’s been around for years. What bothers me is how insensitive SB and Mission America are to the rabid racism offered up by the other videos. Linking to the It’s Elementary footage in spite of the fact that the YouTube account owner placed it there as part of a vile and racist purpose should ring a very large bell within their collective conscience.
And he called for the “tag” to be removed, that’s rich. Forget the violent, racist, Nazi material we are sending our “ministry” members to look at, but please do take this little tag off the video so we can exploit it for our own purposes without appearing too transparent.
I’ve noticed that all references to “Heavenly Hope Christian Church”, which was started last summer or fall have been removed from SB’s home page. No sermons have been printed on SB’s blog since October. I guess we have to conclude that Heavenly Hope was another of SB’s short-lived ventures like Straight Talk Radio. No word of what happened to it, though, on the site. Now the focus seems to be a new support group for family members of The Homosexual:
“SBM’s new division – The Parents’ Group. SBM will be holding LIVE internet telecasts, LIVE worldwide prayer and LIVE Weekend Video Conferences that YOU can attend – right in the comfort of your OWN HOME — at your OWN COMPUTER!”
Has anyone else tried to call and ask for clarification? I would call again but I am not sure it would make any difference. I am curious what other people may have experienced.
I’ve found little use in contacting Stephen Bennett. You can ask Warren how he responded, as I think he emailed. Bennett doesn’t seem to be an idealogical foe to be reasoned with, but someone who stumbled onto “ex-gay ministry” as a way to make money without working. His run with anyone of note was brief.
A prominent “pro-family” leader (who has requested off the record chats, so I will abide by their request for anonymity), emailed me this morning questioning if I really believe that Bennett was aware of the racism before posting. While I will reply to this on G-A-Y on Monday, I do want to say a few things:

-Bennett offers a quote in which he calls me and Aravosis “simply troublemakers and ‘bullies’ who need serious help.” But yet he still has not issued a public apology or responded to either of us directly?!
Ugh.
Well, that accounts for everything. Obviously they have absolutely no idea what bigotry and oppression even *are*.
The funny thing is that, except for their tacked on hate-message at the end, the videos they are frothing at both ends about, are pretty good. There was one comment by one teacher in the roundtable discussion that was phrased perfectly, but compared to what comes out of theo-fascists on a near-daily basis, it was of little consequence.
There is no sign of brainwashing techinques at all – quite the opposite.
LaBarbera is not only a liar, he’s a very clumsy one.
Yeah, Rick. That online support group for parents has apparently been up for a little while now. I think that online support is great, and many parents can undoubtedly use it, but this is the first time I’ve seen someone charging a monthly subscription fee for an online support group. I would have a lot more respect for him if he were doing this on a volunteer basis, as so many do.
As it is, he is preying on vulnerable, clueless, parents who would give anything to “understand” their “hellbent” gay kids and who think they’re going to be able to invoke an instant, magical transformation in their kids, similar to the one that SB talks about. I know many straight parents are terribly upset and uncertain when their kids come out, and I can understand why so many of them seek out folks like Dobson and organizations like Exodus and give them money, but it is discouraging that they’re so vulnerable that SB is able to make a living off of them when his motivations seem so incredibly transparent.

You have to pay or donate money to Stephen Bennett Ministries in order to be allowed in. I tried to join without paying and my mebership was declined. So much for varied opinion.
Which brings up another issue: Isn’t it a bit telling that these guys NEVER allow people to comment or respond to their articles?
