Performance artist Peterson Toscano and fellow blogger Christine Bakke announced today the launch of Beyondexgay.com, a new online community designed to provide support for “survivors” of ex-gay programs.

“The ex-gay experience is unique in many ways. No one understands it better than those of us who have been through it. Creating a communal space for ex-gay survivors to tell their stories allows us to share what led us into an ex-gay lifestyle and ways we have been able to recover from it,” Bakke said in a press release issued today by Soulforce.

Beyondexgay.com looks to be a valuable resource for those that have been hurt or disillusioned by their experiences with ex-gay ministries. For years such individuals have quietly fallen through the cracks as Exodus has publicly claimed its “hundreds of thousands” of alleged success stories, so this new venture should provide a counterbalance to the rosy pictures painted by Exodus spokespersons.

In the same press release, Soulforce announced that it will be hosting The Survivor’s Conference: Beyond Ex-gay, to be held June 29 – July 1 at the University of California-Irvine in conjunction with Beyondexgay.com and the LGBT Resource Center at UC Irvine. Registration for the conference is being conducted through the Soulforce website.
