Exodus President Alan Chambers Is Clear About Coulter Comment

March 9th, 2007 David Roberts

Instead of the shameless psuedo-defense coming from some other ex-gay groups, Exodus president Alan Chambers was unambiguous in his admonition of Ann Coulter over her recent use of the word “faggot” in a comment about Democrat presidential hopeful John Edwards.

Used in any context, this hurtful word is used to demean an individual who is valuable to God. There is nothing to be gained by denigrating others with crude slurs. In doing so, we disgrace ourselves and discredit the truths we seek to publicly elevate.

Unlike PFOX and Peter LaBarbera, the latter of which seems to pine for the good old days when one could utter such comments in peace, we applaud Alan for making a clear and prompt statement for basic decency.

To the others we can only ask, what were you thinking?

Your contact link on the media enquiries page didn’t work.

You may find this interesting. The President of the Southern Baptist Seminary, Albert Mohler, acknowledges that science is coming towards a consensus that there is a genetic/biological “cause” for homosexuality and proposes genetic manipulation to “cure” gays.

Although I am no fan of Alan’s, I think that his post on Ann Coulter was direct and to the point.

I was far less impressed by Randy Thomas (at randythomas.org) and Mike Ensley (at http://mikeensley.vox.com/)

Credit due, and goes to Allan on this stand.

Tiny drops coming from Alan Chambers. This does not impress me. The fix has been in for a long time, support of anti marriage and bullying bills. Interference with the formation of GSA’s in schools.

Determination to maintain the conflict and expectation that gays and lesbians not only can change…but that they SHOULD, and hedging this by calling for support from the government.

Ann Coulter’s remark is just another in a long list of career bomb throwing.
Call me cynical, but why wouldn’t Alan Chambers jump in when the controversy is hot?
I am unconvinced he said this for the benefit of the gay and lesbian community, but more to gain visibility for himself and who he represents.
Perhaps to make himself and the ex gays he’s in front of, look far more empathetic than I think really exists there.
His compassion has always been conditional though, right?
As is true of the ex gay industry in general.
I have sometimes blushed myself at the gratitude expressed from the gay and lesbian community for what I consider something that straight people should be doing routinely for their gay neighbors because it’s right, not for accolades.

I suppose I’m in no place to say who can direct similar thanks to.
But I suppose I’m looking at the entirety of Alan Chamber’s activity, instead of this particular statement.

Y’all can weigh in on what I say. But I’ll stand by it, nonetheless.

Oh yeah…and Andrew Sullivan was impressed by Mohler’s response to the Coulter bomb.

But Mohler has ALWAYS been anti gay.

So, what I”m trying to say it, it’s far easier to criticize a WORD…but all the while making flesh and blood be compromised.
