Infographic: Exgay Groups Pose As Moderates for APA Protest

August 21st, 2006 Daniel Gonzales

I knew something had to be done with the images from the recent exgay protest at the APA convention. The two groups who organized the protest (NARTH and Exodus) hold far more radical views than the protest presented. The first image shows the original message and is followed by my interpretation of what these organizations actually believe.

Such a book actually exists.

Exodus has a section of its website devoted to fighting the civil rights of former clients/patients.

Hmm. All those signs look like they came from the same graphic designer and printer. When I see a protest with no handmade signs — whether or not I agree with the opinion of the protesters — I just think “sheep.” I don’t see the opinion, I just see the herd.

I guess they were printed to make them easier to read from a distance. There were only about two dozen protesters.

I’ve seen many large scale protests with handmade signs that display not one single original thought.

You are correct, Autumn. BAAAAA BAAAA

“You don’t have to be gay.” – No, if you happen to have been born with a heterosexual orientation then you don’t “have” to be gay. Even if you are born with a homosexual orientation you can choose to live a life of celibacy, denial and loneliness – you don’t “have” to come out, join in with the rest of us in the gay community and live an honest and open life.

“Not gay is also OK” – Is there anyone arguing otherwise? I didn’t realize that there were any gay-supremacists out there declaring heterosexuality to be a deviant, perverted “lifestyle”.

How sad that these people are protesting the APA’s official position on homosexuality. Years and years of science and research are to be trumped by what, exactly? Has the “ex-gay” crowd ever produced a single example of a “cured” individual with a complete change of sexual orientation?

It all, really, just makes me want to scream.

Hey. I like specially the one saying “but even if u can’t change, u can’t get married either” lol, oh so funny… Good work, but, sad to say, it’s just sad. Well, i can get cured… oh, is that right? and how? heterossexuals are just like homossexuals. I see no differenc, only with who u have sex relations. Oh, who are u foolin’ around? We are all the same, u need to be pretty blind to do not see that. So, and now I am curious: how can u cure me? Stay well.

Re: The “Not Gay is Ok” gentleman in the first two photos. I would certainly hope for his sake, that he is indeed “Not Gay”. It would be most unfortunate for him if he were.

Daniel and grantdale, the Photoshopping was awesome!

And I’ve seen *several* books that touch on preventing homosexuality in children, especially boys. (James Dobson’s “Bringing Up Boys” was just awful, and he’s threatening us with one about girls!)

Just a thought to ponder — NARTH and Exodus were “asking” APA to recognize reparative therapy as a valid psychological treatment. However, Love in Action (Exodus flagship ministry and leader in residential reparative therapy) defended themselves before the state of Tennessee against licensure contending they were exempt because they were offering psychological services (reference back to the legal trouble they were in surrounding their practices with gay youth)

Having cake and eating it too…..?

    jeff,

I think you meant “..because they were NOT offering psychological services…”

And yes, you’re right. There’s little care for consistency in what Exodus says.
