Are We Hypocrites?

December 27th, 2005 15 comments

We here at exgaywatch have been recently criticized for not applying the same standards to those that oppose the ex-gay ministries as we do to those who support them. Specifically, we have been called hypocrites for not condemning a website put up by the Michigan Quakers called exgaymichigan.org.

Old Handouts From My Time In Therapy With Joseph Nicolosi

(Click to download packet in Acrobat)

I was sorting through my old NARTH files at my parents’ place over Christmas and found some old handouts Nicolosi gave me on one of the two occasions I saw him in person for therapy. My first session was held at his home office (where I was probably given the handouts) and the second occasion was a father-son session held in his Encino clinic. Most of my sessions were via telephone since I was in San Luis Obispo for school. I know they came from Nicolosi since he’s the only ex-gay therapist I ever saw or collected literature from. Click on the image to download the packet in Adobe Acrobat format. Yes, the original graphic quality is that bad.

Update 8/12/06: I believe Niolosi wrote about these handouts on the NARTH website here.

When You Just Can’t Say It

December 27th, 2005 74 comments

Resource available for those people unable to bring themselves to purchase a book with “HOMOSEXUALITY” on the cover. Well I’m assuming the “H…” is for homosexuality, it could stand for any number of things, I mean for all I know it could be for Hindus who wish to convert to Christianity. Get it here.

In addition to the article in Christianity Today previously discussed here that addressed religious media coverage of Brokeback Mountain, an article in the New York Times by John Leland addresses the same topic.

Christmas Roundup: Dan’s Hometown Gay Bar & How Christmas Made Peterson Ex-Gay

December 25th, 2005 8 comments

Janetrenodanceparty.jpg

Christmas greetings from Ventura, my hometown as well as home of the only gay bar between Santa Barbara and LA County. That bar, Paddy’s, serves an important role as a sort of community gathering center during holidays when boys return home [like myself] and others less fortunate can find “family” to spend the day with. Paddy’s has served free Thanksgiving dinner to the needy [and I don't mean monetary wealth] for years. I went to Paddy’s Friday night and I’ll go again tonight, Christmas, because it will be packed with people I haven’t seen since highschool. I’ll just try and forget Friday’s drag show which was sort of like the SNL sketch of Will Ferrell as Janet Reno.

But on the Peterson, he was one of the few homos online Christmas morning [10am Pacific] so we got to chatting about his Christmas. It’s good to know someone is blogging over the holiday:

How Christmas Made Me “Ex-Gay”

I sat next to him at Christmas Eve dinner last night. Nice guy. German-born, travelled the world with his UN parents, lives in NY. Artist type. In a room of heterosexual family and friends I wondered if this man could be “the one”–the ultimate Christmas gift–a life partner.

We chatted, we joked, I let it slip out a dozen ways that I am gay. The white wine and his open friendly banter made me believe he was too. “I’m heading home tomorrow,” I placed on the table. He countered, “I wish you would stay.”

Next at the Brazilian Christmas Eve bash (replete with non-stop dancing, darts and enough food to save a medium-sized starving village), I chatted some more with the potential love of my life. Did he look extra deep into my eyes?

As my Brazilian friends, in precise heterosexual pairing, danced circles around the gringos, my love, my mate, my life partner to be, broke my heart with a casual aside about a recent girlfriend being Brazilian, then he twirled away in the arms of a blond woman leaving me standing by the basket of bread (the carbs of comfort).

Maybe it was the switch to red wine or the realization that I was probably the only gay man in a room of nearly 20 couples, but I suddenly felt alone, angry, deflated.

This is just the introduction, see the rest of Peterson’s post.

Christianity Today Looks At Christian Media Response to Brokeback

December 22nd, 2005 10 comments

Christianity Today has an article today that reflects on the movie reviews given by Christian media for Brokeback Mountain. Author Jeffrey Overstreet doesn’t pay attention to the gadflys like Stephen Bennett but instead focuses on more reputable sources.

His review shows that most Christian reviewers recognize the technical brilliance of the film along with the moving character development. The interesting aspect of this article is the wide range of response given by reviewers who start with the premise that “homosexuality is considered a sin”.

For those interested in the nuances now seen in certain Christian influences, this can be a thought provoking read. Overall, the reviews were surprisingly favorable.

While I’m out, please offer constructive feedback about the James Dobson baseball card, XGW’s other infographics, and features that you wish to see added or changed at XGW.

I wish everyone a happy Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, and Jesus of Nazareth Symbolic Anniversary Day.

Focus Dismisses Biblical Truth About Christmas

December 21st, 2005 17 comments

The Chicago Tribune reports on true conservative churches — in other words, churches that reject trees, Santa, carols, consumer merchandise swapping, and other unbiblical icons of the ancient seasonal holiday currently known as Christmas.

I respect these churches’ efforts to remain focused on the true faith, free from material and spiritual distractions.

At Focus on the Family, however, moral relativists dismiss the Bible. They rationalize that it’s OK to borrow non-Christian idols and associate them with Christ’s symbolic day of birth because all these particular idolatries didn’t exist when the Bible was written:

Hard Times At Love In Action

December 21st, 2005 1 comment

Hard times, and rumors of such, are circulating around the Memphis, Tenn.-based antigay therapeutic outfit Love In Action.

The Memphis-based Queer Action Coalition observes declining activity at LIA headquarters, talk of internal conflict, and the possible closure of one of two live-in facilities.

QAC briefly recalls the harm done to Mid-South families by LIA’s obstinate tunnelvision, its aversion to familial love and unity, its poorly trained staff and unprofessional handling of patients.

But instead of wishing for the organization’s demise, as some other activists have done, QAC extends holiday greetings to the organization with the hope that LIA’s chilled hearts will eventually be warmed, and LIA’s closed minds eventually opened.
