I encounter many ex-gays online who call themselves “born again” and “Christian.”

But when they pray aloud, in some cases I do not hear them praying to an objective Christian God. At times, their newborn “personal relationship” seems to be less with God, more with their inner selves and with the joyous secularism foreseen by Dietrich Bonhoeffer. The religious right is no way neo-Nazi, but its faith in America (and the almost apostolic Founding Fathers) does mirror various Christian nations’ religious idolization of fatherland over the centuries.

In stark contrast to joyous secularism, here’s a homeless bishop whose Christian values and actions make the Gospels come alive.
